Who is ITheatre?

Picture
 The Beginning

IT started with a dream in the Fall of 1991.  Students sat at the Donna High School cafeteria dreaming of an artistic outlet. They met J.J. Jonas, a young English teacher, who had a vision of building a theatre department at Donna High School.  With only the teacher's artistic vision, no funding and no theater they began a rag-tag theatre troupe.  People around them began to see their passion and the troupe grew in numbers and support.  The troupe eventually secured a budget and despite their limited resources they continued to grow.  They began to rehearse plays at a 1960's era middle school theater with holes in the roof and when it rained they had an indoor waterfall.  It was from this humble start that they went on to be known as the Milagro (Miracle) Players.
No one knew what the future would hold, but 4 years later the troupe was at Bass Concert Hall on The University of Texas at Austin campus, performing at the UIL One Act State Competition. With the vision of a few and the dedication of many, the Milagro Players had arrived.  These creative seeds planted years ago continued to grow and branch out.
Years later..... some of those same dreamers found themselves with the same desire they had decades ago in that Donna High School cafeteria....... the desire for an artistic outlet.  We knew the Rio Grande Valley needed to grow artistically.  It was with this vision in mind that ITheatre was founded.
ITheatre is comprised of like-minded individuals with a love for theatre.
In 2017 The Mid-Valley Civic Theater founded by Shirley Atkins and later continued by Rise Morris invited us to continue the almost 50 year tradition of the Tower Theater of Weslaco.  We are honored and excited to be a part of the next chapter of The Tower Theater of Weslaco.
Our mission is to make theatre accessible to everyone.  We are a community theatre that believes that a community can support local arts and artists, and by doing so, it will become culturally enriched.  We strive to produce professional-quality theatrical productions that inspire and entertain our community.
We believe theatre can teach young and old:
  • Communication skills
  • Self-awareness, confidence, and risk-taking
  • Discipline
  • Teamwork and collaboration
  • Empathy and understanding

Sincerely,
S. Urbina
