Summary: In this stage adaptation of George Orwell's 1984, we explore a dystopian society where constant surveillance and the control of information are used to maintain power. The protagonist, Winston Smith, a party member who works at the Ministry of Truth, begins to secretly rebel against the party and its leader, “Big Brother”, through a secret and forbidden affair with Julia. The play explores themes of totalitarianism, surveillance, control of information, the importance of free thought, and the struggle between individual freedom and social conformity.
Winston Smith (Male, 25-45): The protagonist of the play, a 39-year-old Outer Party functionary who privately rebels against the Party's totalitarian rule. Frail, intellectual, and fatalistic, Winston works in the Records Department of the Ministry of Truth rewriting news articles to conform with the Party's current version of history. Winston perceives that the Party's ultimate goal is to gain absolute mastery over the citizens of Oceania by controlling access to the past and—more diabolically—controlling the minds of its subjects.
Julia (Female, 20-30): Winston's 26-year-old lover who works in the Fiction Department at the Ministry of Truth. Julia is opportunistic, practical, intellectually primitive, vital, and uninterested in politics. She believes that the Party is unconquerable through organized resistance, and that secret disobedience is the only effective form of revolt. She delights in breaking the rules, and her cunning and courageousness inspires Winston to take greater and greater risks. (Female, 20-30)
O’Brien (Male, 25-55): A mysterious, powerful, and sophisticated member of the Inner Party whom Winston believes is also a member of the Brotherhood, the legendary group of anti-Party rebels.
Syme (Male/Female, 25-65): A politically orthodox linguist and colleague of Winston's whose job is to edit the Eleventh Edition of the Newspeak dictionary.
Parsons (Female, 35-55): An obnoxious and dull Party member who lives near Winston and works at the Ministry of Truth.
Gladys (Female, 10-15): Parsons’ daughter and a member of the Party’s Junior Spy organization.
Landlady (Female, 55+): An impoverished, unkempt woman who sells Winston and Julia a house that they can live in free from Big Brother’s authority.
